Biographical information

Born January 28, 1893 (Lutsk). Soc. Sec. says Jan. 20, 1892, and so does the 1920 census.
Pasasport application Mar. 8, 1923 says that he is 38.

Ellis Islands have him immigrating as Jone Cherlin, from Lutczk, with Benjamin (Berl) on December 26, 1912, from Dover, England, on the Lapland. Also sister Minnie, according to family. The typed transcript of the manifest has "Tone" and "Lutezk".

Recorded as naturalized in the court of Camp Hancock, Augusta, GA Dec. 6, 1918. Address 367 So. 5th St., Brooklyn, NY.

1920 Census: 352 South Fifth St., Brooklyn, aged 28, living with Sarah, Isadore, Irving (Nachman's son). Musician. Listed as "John". Immigrated 1913.

Married in Manhattan Sep 25, 1921, name given as Johan, and signed as Johann. Residence 367 So. 5th St. Brooklyn. Age 28. Mother's name written Trebitz.

Returned via Ellis Island, September 7, 1923, under the name Joham Cherlin. Port of embarkation, Le Havre, France; at this time, was a U.S. citizen, living in Brooklyn.

A talented musician, who played clarinet with symphony orchestras, in particular 2nd chair, Cleveland Orchestra, 1920-1924, with Louis Green as first chair ( list).
M ade a trial recording for Victor Records in 1919.

and that I am domesticated in the United States, my permanent residence being at Cleveland in the State of Ohio, where I follow the occupation of Musician.
