A difficult case. It appears that Max and Ethel went by Cherlin and their children and later descendants go by Serlin. In particular Max's death certificate gives his name as Max Cherlin, and identifies his son as Louis Serlin. In another place Ethel's maiden name Swerdlow is given as (or transcribed as) Swerdlian.
