Bulkin Family

This page contains some information about members of the Bulkin family in Vilna. It is an offshoot of the Cherlin family pages.

Ruchel Tvia Cherlin, daughter of Elye Velvel, was born about 1878 and married a man named Bulkin who made fur hats. We have records for Chaim and Rokha Bulkin which we believe are hers, given on that page.

As seen in the 1926-1930 Polish Business Directories for Vilna, this is actually Bułkin, with the Polish L:

Information was found in a Vilna city directory (business and residential) for 1914-1915 concerning the following Bulkins. There were no Bulkina's listed separately.

Eight of the Memorandum Books for 1890-1904 were investigated (1866, 1867, 1872, 1879, 1888, 1890, 1900, 1904). No Tsirlin or Bulkin was found.

There are photographs showing a teacher named Bulkin at the Childrens' Aid Society, specifically the Vilna Jewish Home for Girls. Dates 1916-1918. URL http://yivo1000towns.cjh.org, registration required.

Joseph Buloff

Interestingly, Stew Cherlin observes that the Lithuanaian/American actor Joseph Buloff is actually a Bulkin as well. And indeed, it is possible that his father Benjamin Bulkin is on the list shown above. Apparently Bulkin alternated with Bulow (perhaps depending on what language was being spoken). Yosef Bulkin was born in 1899 in Vilna to Benjamin Bulkin and Sarah Rotlast. There is an intriguing birth record of a Samuil Bulkin born to Benjamin Bulkin and Sara Roitbord in Vilna in 1899. Since the Russians relied on the patronymic system, if Yosef's name was in fact Shmuel Yosef then only the first name would be recorded. We have assembled a few snippets of information (some of it contradictory) about Joseph Buloff from various internet sources, which are collected in this text.

A review of the English translation of ``From the Old Marketplace'' by Joseph Buloff was published in the New York Times in March, 1991.

1 Z is probably a typo in the 1928 Business Directory, should be M[owaza]
2 Codyk name only appears on the 1926/1927 Business Directory.
